Select and Group Geometry

Select and group surfaces and volumes.

Updated this week

Select

There are a few different ways to select surfaces and volumes:

  • Multiple surfaces and volumes can be selected at once from within the Geometry panel by holding down the Command ⌘ key (on a Mac) or the Windows ⊞ key (on a PC) and clicking on each desired surface.

  • Multiple surfaces and volumes in a row can be selected at once by selecting the first and then holding down the Shift key and then selecting the last.

  • Surfaces and volumes can be selected within the 3D Viewer by clicking on them. If you have grouped surfaces together, a single-click on a surface within a group will select all surfaces in that group. If you want to select only one surface and not the entire group, double-click on a surface.

  • Multiple surfaces can be directly selected within the 3D Viewer by holding down the CTRL key and clicking on these surfaces to add or remove them from the selection.

You can also right-click on your model and select surfaces or volumes using the context menu.

Box Selection

You can also use the more powerful box selection feature in the 3D Viewer to select surfaces.

  • To select only visible surfaces, hold down Shift and drag from left to right. Any visible surfaces intersecting this box when the left mouse button is released will be selected.

  • To select visible and underlying surfaces, hold down Shift and draft from right to left. Any visible and underlying surfaces intersecting this box when the left mouse button is released will be selected.

  • Having already selected surfaces, you can add to that current selection by holding down Shift and CTRL, and left clicking and dragging a new box over the surfaces you wish to add.

  • To remove surfaces, hold down Option/Alt, and left click and drag a new box over the surfaces you wish to subtract from the selection.

Grouping Surfaces

You can group together multiple surfaces, including actuator disks. These are similar to named selections in other CFD tools. To do so, select multiple surfaces, then press G on your keyboard or right-click and select Group. You can also nest groups together.

You can ungroup previously grouped surfaces by selecting the group in the Geometry panel, then pressing Shift + G on your keyboard. You can also right-click and select Ungroup.

Important: Due to a current known issue, if you create a far-field after grouping surfaces, the groupings are deleted. As a workaround, create a far-field before grouping surfaces.
