Surface LIC
Updated over a week ago

This is an Early Access feature that is still under development. View the Luminary Cloud Early Access Terms.

Use the Surface LIC (Line Integral Convolution) tool to analyze flow patterns on the surface of your model.

Luminary’s surface LIC feature operates directly in object-space and uses the vector field defined on the surface, providing an interactive visualization when viewing the result.

  1. Click the Surface LIC icon in the visualization toolbar. This will open up the tool in the properties panel.

  2. Select the desired Surface LIC Field.

Note that for a valid surface LIC result, you should select a non-zero vector field on the input surface. For example, wall shear stress on the geometry surface.

  3. Select whether you'd like to generate the LIC on Geometry Surfaces or a Plane.

    1. If you chose Plane, set the Origin and Normal in Cartesian coordinates, then set the minimum and maximum Plane Bounds, which specify the bounding box that the LIC will be generated within.

    2. If you chose Geometry Surfaces, click Edit to add the surfaces you want to study.

  4. Click the check button to apply the settings. It may take up to a minute to compute. You can still interact with the platform while this operation is running.

  5. Navigate to the Visualizations section of the control panel and select the Surface LIC visualization that you just created.

  6. Use the dropdown menus in the Display section to adjust the final appearance of the LIC and adjust the contrast using the sliders.

If your surface LIC looks splotchy, we recommend hiding the surfaces that the filter is applied to for best results.

Important: The final resolution of the surface LIC is dependent on the input mesh file resolution. Currently, we auto-refine the surface to improve the resolution and corresponding quality of the surface LIC.
